The Mount Sinai Medical Center, the New York City-based 1,171 bed tertiary- and quaternary-care teaching facility, has announced it's creating a new data management and analysis platform that will be able to communicate with the organization’s electronic health record. Yet another provider is facing unanticipated struggles with electronic health record system adoption. Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is blaming additional costs and lost revenue on the 2012 implementation of its Epic EHR.

Sharing data contained in electronic health records with patients offers a number of benefits, according  to a recent study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research . Patient access to  health data contained in an EHR system has been a hotly debated topic recently so it’s interesting that some researchers, from the Veteran’s Administration and elsewhere, have tried to determine what patients actually experienced when they had such access by studying the My HealthVet EHR access pilot program. The My Health e Vet Pilot, the initial personal health record of the US Department of Veterans Affairs, allowed patients and their delegates to view and download content contained in their electronic health record, including clinical notes, laboratory tests, and imaging reports.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson recently posted a website statement to notify patients of a breach of health and personal data.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has issued a breach notice to an unknown number of patients after a laptop containing patients' personal health information had been lost.
